Earning Rings and Shibaricon Update

Like red buttons used to joke when he would appear on the Dean Martin roasts and exclaim loudly “I never got a dinner” the humor inherent in the joke is the irony of its absurdity but it was brought to mind for me during Shibaricon

FIrst let me digress and talk about how wonderful the event is and especially this year we topped all our previous attendance records and the event was packed the teachers new and old did an incredible job of making it work and teaching new and old attendees alike.

I have to say as one of the people who started the event and whose been the equipment manager for the last four years, (with my real job being Mortis’s right hand problem solver and fix it guy) this was a fantastic event, more so because this is the first year all my event work was pre event and meant that i had no actual duties at the event other than those I chose to take on, I was able to actually experience the event as our guests and presenters do. I have to say with considerable pride that we put on one heck of an event and so nicely run!

Someone asked me what I have done for the event this year and my roles included Rebuilding the website and acting as webmaster also designed the enamel pins for this year so if you liked them they were my work also various graphics including the cover of the event book (No didn’t take the picture I just put the cover together for the printer)and also acting as an advice and information source for Diana.

A big Kudos to andy whose stepped into my shoes as the equipment manager for the event and all the people old and new who’ve stepped up to the plate and make the event happen.

Which is where the whole things about rings comes in, and you thought I was just going to ramble on, In the rope community as in the larger SM community there is a ritual of passing on objects of meaning to those who learn from and grow with us. In the leather community it’s earning your leathers it can be a hat a vest, boots, whatever has meaning and is appropriate to the situation and sensibilities involved, the earning can be ornate, ritualistic and symbol laden or as simple as being handed a package with something from your mentor or loved ones that is new or something old and personal. There are no rules to this other than the meaning and symbolism that people put of themselves into the exchange.

In the rope world the objects gifted are usually someone’s first rope set or their first suspension ring like any journeyman’s tools a ring is that one item that isn’t cheap and will last any rigger their entire career as in the days of the stone masons or woodworkers that handing on of good tools when you’ve earned the status of peer carries on here as well.

I have never been given a ring i always joke about largely because over the years i’ve not had any one teacher or relationship that would garner such an accolade when i came into the scene I had already been tying and playing with rope since I was 5 (A funny story for another time) among the people at the time I wasn’t a novice but a peer I was someone who walked into the scene and soon after was teaching people what I knew. My compatriots included Lochai and SirC and a few others would hang out at hellfire and play with rope. Any Sat night you could Find SirC using the rings in the concrete ceiling of hellfire to do her early suspensions or myself in back doing Karadas and chest harness out of 100 foot lengths of rope with Lochai and friends (At the time all the Japanese bondage images we had ever seen we could only see the fronts of. We didn’t know they were made of short lengths of rope at the time we didn’t know and nobody else really knew either) these were fun times of discovery and invention. Everyone learned off of everyone else and as always I would and did share what I learned as I went with many classes at TES teaching basic rope and more complex rope to anyone who wanted to know.

At this years shibaricon an interesting ceremony was held Both Lochai and SirC presented 2 people with rings one was Suzanne SxySadist and the other person was Firefly. Both are people very deserving of the symbolism I have watched Firefly grow up in the scene and go from a gawky kid to a rigger in his own right Suzanne has been an incredible teacher and friend to many people.
I was very happy to be there and to applaud them after the presentation as much as I was surprised by it not having know that it was going to take place.

It made me think over the rest of the event about recognition for the things we do in the scene personal and otherwise and what do we get in return. i listened as i walked around the event I looked at what an event its become in the 5 years, what came out of an insane night driving around with Mortis at Black roses annual event where i had only just been introduced to him at a touch of SM TNG meet and greet where myself Lolita and Mortis gave little one on one lessons to anyone who wanted.

Mortis and I spent the rest of the event running around and hanging out me pushing him to do his first suspension and to really move forwards and showing him the 2 Sanwa mook how-to books I had acquired thru a friend who had bought them for me in Japan.
The Genesis for Shibaricon came out of a final 12 hour discussion in the lobby of the BR overflow hotel with us talking about what kind of rope event we would like to see and who we wanted to see at it as well as the shape it would take. I told Mortis if you do it just get me there and I would help make it happen and he held me to that promise. Many months ensued with use talking to all hours online about the who’s and what’s and wheres of the event with the culmination of all the work being the first Shibaricon.

Its been 5 years and many changes have happened, the event that in many ways could have been a one of or worse a total crash and burn is a success and has helped change the face of rope bondage in the US as well as the world, its opened doors in Japan and helped people get the information and teaching they want of the skill and kink that they enjoy.

Walking around the event this year I had many people come over and express how happy they were to see me this year after the teething pains of last year and some just wanted to talk I listened to people and helped with things if they needed help or information or whatever. Walking around on Saturday night a rather large scary person from Seattle thanked me for the single rope cuffs I developed. The cuffs turn out to be perfect with some minor adjustments for his partners weak wrists giving her a more comfortable time when they do various types of scenes.

My class went well and I had people surprise me by thanking me for them as well as for past class’s they had taken and told me about how they had used those teachings over the last couple of years I and I also started to think about my time as A TES Board member and as the TES webmaster and all the class’s and events i’ve helped do and how much i’ve been involved in the scene and how much i’ve helped shape it and expand it.
Remembering a recent friend telling me that she used to read about Me and Lolita and Boymeat when she would research the scene when she was 16 and how she wanted to do the things she read about, I also thought about being a witness for the Barbara Nitke lawsuit against the CDA and all the TES events like TES 2000 and TES30 that I was a part of.

I remembered a number of people who have popped up in my life over the last couple years who have reminded me of where I have been and my effect on them one person telling me how a signal whip class I gave years ago gave them their start in learning how to love and play with whips someone else mentioned my explanation of Zen BDSM really connected with them as to where they needed to be in the kinks they needed, when i least expect it I find someone else who has a memory of me.

And I thought a lot about how no “I have never been given a ring” no not one ring ever not a single one, instead i have been given many rings that i do treasure greatly

The art of the Single Tail with Dov

Date: Friday - March 28, 2008
Time: 8:45 PM - 10:45 PM
Place: #250 West 26th Street, NYC (bet: 7th and 8th Ave entrance thru the parking lot)
Contact Phone: 1-718-796-9888
Contact Email: info@DomSubFriends.com

Free Raffle of SM Videos and/or Adult Toys at all of our meetings.

The Presentation:

One of the most unique encounters is to watch a scene involving a single tail master directing this dangerous implement against the bottom’s naked flesh. An individual, who is skilled in this form of SM play, can cause extreme sensations to come out from hiding.

However, most tops are afraid to try this toy, due to their inexperience.

Many bottoms crave to experience the single tail, yet are afraid to try, due to the top not being experienced enough. So what’s the solution for those who want to try and face the dilemma above? Come to this demo!

You will learn from Dov step by step the techniques necessary to use this implement correctly and safely.

If you own a single tail, bring it with you to learn and practice.

The Presenter:

Dov is a NYC based artist, photographer, sculptor, educator; Japanese rope bondage and single tail whip fanatic, computer geek and just has way too many hobbies. He has been in the NYC scene for a decade, and served 4 years on the TES board and was TES’s webmaster for 7 years and was also a founding member of TEC at TES.

He has been involved for years both politically and artistically, creating works at Burning Man and other venues. His work varies from installations to performance art, both vanilla and fetish. Most recently his work was featured at Diesel Denim Gallery in SoHo NYC, where he created a Shibari rope window to highlight a photo series of their jeans by Japanese erotic photographer Araki.

As an educator he has given numerous presentations and classes on everything from rope bondage and Japanese rope bondage to canes and whips at TES , Bondage SIG at TES GMSMA, Black Rose(DC), Shibaricon, Leather Leadership Conference 7 in Boston, Leather Retreat, The Tannery(Philly), Passional (Phily), TES2000, Purple Passion, Silk at Bard College, Conversio Virium at Columbia, and WHAP at NYU.

As a Top/Dom and equal opportunity sadist, his areas of interest in BDSM and fetish and kink in general are a bit broad and include, but are not limited to: flogging, single tails, rope corsets and rope bondage in both Western and Japanese Styles, pony play, objectification, humiliation, knives, fire play, impact play (punching slapping etc…), pressure points, breath play, water sports. And that’s just the short list. He’s been tying things up since he was 5 and just keeps buying more rope for nefarious purposes and to feed his passion for rope bondage

Shibaricon

ShibariCon
May 23-26, 2008
Chicago, IL USA

Register before February 15th to get the early registration rate of
$160.00 for this fabulous 4-day event.

Who is teaching at ShibariCon this year?

Lee Harrington, Scott Smith, Jimi Tatu, Lochai, Mark Yu, Jay Wiseman,
David Lawrence, Jim Duvall, Mark of DV8 House, Sir C & Graydancer are
just a few of the more than 35 presenters that will be teaching our
best lineup of classes yet.

Please check www.shibaricon. com over the
next month for presenter and class updates.

But, will it be FUN???

In addition to his teaching duties, Graydancer has some great fun
planned that will include an open mic style performance night where
you can get in touch with your inner (or not so inner) exhibitionist and
perform for a crowd. Watch the web site for more details!

Our 11,000 sq ft playspace, fully furnished with awesome bondage
equipment, will be open until 3:00am on Friday, Saturday & Sunday
nights. We will also have some smaller adjacent play rooms open
expanding the playspace to over 14,000 sq ft. Practice rooms will be
open throughout the event.

But, what if I’m alone???

Classes at ShibariCon are always fun and engaging. Of the over 80
classes being taught most are hands-on and teaming up with a newfound
lab partner is common. ShibariCon is a very friendly event and meeting
people is easy! Many folks attend classes solo and find a practice
partner there.

Many close friendships have been formed among our attendees throughout
the years. We even have a couple who met at the event a few years ago
planning to be married at the event this year.

Love to shop?

ShibariCon will have vendors selling everything from rope & toys to
corsets & shoes. Support our vendors and support the continued success
of the event.

ShibariCon is a gathering of rope-lovers where education is the
primary focus. Days are filled with classes scheduled in 7 concurrent
sessions with as many as 28 choices per day offering options for
everyone. Top, bottom, switch, expert, novice or something in between
- ShibariCon will have the right educational opportunity for you. Come
see why ShibariCon has become a treasured tradition among so many in
the rope community.

ShibariCon 2008 will take place in the Chicago area from May 23,
2008-May 26, 2008. Please see http://www.shibaric on.com
for details.

improved slightly but is still unable to speak. She is more alert and

My one purchase From Midoris table at the Fetish Flea

Its so wrong i just had to have it ;-)

Shibari phone charm

This is just a common kinda phone charm from Japan its beyond adorable

The Boston err no? The providence Fetish Flea errr mmm okay? THE fetish flea lets just make it simple!

Canceled the TES class late friday as no advertising had gone up. Not really there fault based on the compressed time frame asking me to fill in at the absolute last minute for somone else who never got back to the calendar comitte.
They contacted me late weds and i said yes early thurs but with nothing going out for advertising on friday it just wasnt a good show.
I am never crazy about last minute fill ins for TES in general if you ask me in advance im perfectly hapy to show up but after a point if all your doing is asking me to fill in then its not conducive to me teaching or anyone learning.

In any case will do another class for them another time.

Ao my adventures in Providence starts from a wonderful call from Switch “If I catch a train up to new haven I can drive up with MayMay and her to the flea”.

This being the best last minute offer ive had in a long while I dive at it

Saturday morning after a nice train ride up we set off on a rather fun filled drive which included Switches little car having issues with me unless i sat in the center of the back seat, great conversation including one that ended with the conclusion of Cow!.
We arrived in Providence only to end up going down the wrong exit (19) due to the sighting of a giant one story high blue grasshopper by the highway, no drugs were involved if you kice in providence you know of what im talking about here.

The flea was a blast spent a good hour just getting up the first aisle to with all the people i know just walking up to me or vending there. Had great joy in introducing Switch to Midori (One of the things i do love is being able to make those kinda introductions) and then after much bouncing around made it to monks table only to discover that switch had disappeared (how she missed Monks table i just dont know) and eventually managed to find her and make the appropriate intros there as well.

Running By Viviane and saying Hi

Made it to the rope room finally with just enough time to give a scene mmm ahhhh! meant class on restrictive rope after all no sceneing at the fair only education of course.

Had a great dinner with new friends and old and managed to pull of a mind fuck toping scene at the dinner table involving Mr creosote and a waiter with a small mint wafer.

Sunday the longest most insane breakfast at a small fashionable cafe in which 8 people dwindled down to 3 people and we find out the wait had to do with the place running out of eggs. Getting back to the flea with plans to hit the rope and whip rooms disintegrated as we ended up wandering the vendor space talking and hanging with people.

End result of a fun saturday and sunday some nice time getting to know some friends better some fun rope moments getting to chat with Monk a bit more about the state of rope shibaricon and things in general.
Good moments surprising a lot of people who didn’t expect me to be up there after my lamenting my plans to be there falling thru. Didn’t know i knew so many people in the scene who are based out of providence yay for making connections.

Some concrete resolve to do start some rope things in NY this year, I think its about time!

Dear Scouts,
I just got the word from my contact person. Bettie is out of the
hospital and they have taken her to a nursing home but not because she
is much improved. I will give you the exact quote I got from him,
“I can’t believe how bad she is. She can’t even speak. She can only
acknowledge my presence by moving a finger.” He went on to say that
pneumonia can linger in the elderly for many months so there was no
reason to keep her in the hospital. This was not the call I wanted to
receive. He promised to keep me informed and he even wants me to keep
Jack updated as best as I can since Jack too is in pretty bad shape.
Scouts I thank you all for your prayers and candles and cards.
I’m going to spend the rest of the evening at home in silence.

Bettie forever…

Linen Hemp and blistered hands

Linen Hemp small issues and where not to use it.

Last year at Shibaricon I had the opportunity to pick up some very nice 4mm linen hemp from Twisted monk (Thank you Monk it really is nice rope) in the dealers room. Good price nice feel and a nice light color.
Nice innocuous and friendly or so I thought taking my fine purchase out into the event to see what I could do with it. During one of the classes taught by Lochai on chest harness’s, my assistant who would later figure prominently in my escape artist class decided in the middle of doing basic harness’s that its time to play!

And after proceeding to try and kick me tries to run away (while very tied up in a cheast harness). A delightful tussle ensues with the final result of her being partially suspended in a nearby frame on her tip toes .I suddenly notice that my hand has blood on it and then further realize i have torn a rather large hole in my right index finger. After bandaging the damage I find that the 4mm linen hemp which is nice and soft takes on a Mr Hyde personna when you pull it fast thru your hands it has a wicked tooth unlike the regular 4mm hemp I use.

Essentially the rope being pulled through my fingers when my assistant went running and fighting raised and then ripped open a serious friction blister. Was rather interesting doing the escape artist class while being hampered by the ripped open index finger and the torn tendon in my left index finger (acidental injury from a few months prior to shibarficon that came from the equivalent stupidity of steping of of a curb and breaking a leg).

I am rather proud of myself that I can still take someone down while hampered in that manner, okay the “Ball peen hammer” was usefull in this endevour as well. Fast forward a few months to “The Floating world” and the same class different and much less violent assitant, I still had not replaced the linen hemp and figured relegating it to just tying hair ties would be a good thing, I found myself letting go of the rope as fast as possible while doing a simple hair tie when the subject pulled suddenly and unexpectedly. I could feel the rope biting into my fingers and as soon as i looked at them found the start of a blister that hadn’t been there until the sudden jerk on the rope.So lesson learned this rope has to be treated with a lot of respect and especially around anything that may have some sudden jerky motions like a takedown or resistance.I still do like it just keeping it for very special purposes, maybe rope burn play ;-)

Tutorial 2

Simplest and fastest method for making a Larks Head Knot

© copyright washi-nawashi.com all rights reserved

  1. Make a Bight and put your hand through it.

  2. Reach down and grab the standing ends of the rope.
  3. Slide the Bight down over the top of your hand.
  4. Let the Bight fall off your hand.
  5. And you’re done! This is a Larks head knot.

Tutorial 1

Two Column Tie using nothing but larks heads, loops, friction and a chain sinnet.
© Copyright Washi-Nawashi.com all rights reserved

This is a Tutorial for a unique set of wrist ties that I’ve developed over the years.
Having seen some images of the tie being put up by one or 2 people I’ve taught this technique to, I figured it was time to get off my ass and do a basic tutorial for it.

This is an intermediate to advanced skill level Technique.
I do not recommend this method of tying with anything larger than 6-mm rope, I use it on 6 and 4 mm rope.

This Tutorial uses 6-mm hemp rope through out.
(Bight = loop or bend in the line. Standing or working end = the line that you’re using to tie with that isn’t already tied in a knot)

1 Make a bight in your rope

dsc0069-flip1.jpg

2 Make a larks head and place it over the 2 wrists.
Make sure to keep the bight you bring the “working end” through closest to the wrist (the direction “bight“ points in)!
This is very important for the part when you do the bar wrap.

dsc00701.jpg

3 Grip the rope between the 2 wrists.
This is a reasonable gauge of the approximate distance you want between the 2 wrists.
When you do the bar wrap, it will tighten the space between the wrists, so you don’t want it to tight… just tight enough.

dsc0071-r1.jpg

4 Begin to wrap the wrists with the standing End by going in the opposite direction that you came through the bight.
Make sure to keep the doubled rope even and do not twist the 2 ropes together.
The flatter they lay, the more comfortable and compact the tie will be.

dsc0072-r1.jpg

5 After 2 or 3 wraps, you are ready to finish the tie. How many wraps are up to you. Considering comfort and bulk, I recommend about 2 wraps giving you a total of 6 strands around the wrists.
Find the first rope through the larks heads bight and pass a loop through the bight it makes (Do Not pull the standing end all the way through, just the loop).

dtdtdtcopy2.jpg

6 Pull the loop through, making it long enough to wrap around the rope between the wrists.
Wrap around the rope, making a bar wrap, keeping the wrap even and symmetrical.
Wrap traveling away from the wrist that the bight is closest to.
How long the loop needs to be has to be judged as you do this step. If the loop is too long, just shorten it, and if it’s too long, give it some more rope.
When you almost reach the other wrist, stop! The loop should be almost gone, just making it to the top of the wrap.
Remember where the loop ends up is where the standing end will stop on the bar wrap.
The end of the loop should as close as possible to the location and direction from where you want the standing line to run.

dsc00741.jpg

7 Pull the standing end through the bight of the loop.
dsc00751.jpg

8 Stick your fingers into the spaces between the rope and the wrists. You don’t want those spaces to be too tight.
The rule of thumb here: you should be able to get a finger between the rope and the wrists.
Use this time to pull the standing end tight, to make sure the wrap tightens down, and to ensure there is no slippage when you pull on the standing end.
If you don’t tighten it down, there is a potential for the rope to slide and tighten down on the wrists in a way you don’t want.

dsc00761.jpg

Done

The nice thing about this method is that no matter how hard you pull on the standing end,
once you release tension, you can flip the locking loop up and the whole tie unravels in an instant or two.
All the tension is on the wrap and the tension on the line holds the locking loop in place.
There is nothing that will tighten up and/or become impossible to untie once tension is released.

dsc00771.jpg

Hojo Jitsu style
Chain sinnet locking variant.
This is a continuation of the first set of instructions which will lock the bar wrap so that even if the person manages to relieve the tension on the rope there is no way to untie the wrist tie without getting to the other end of the rope.

1
The difference is instead of pulling the standing ends completely through the locking loop of the bar wrap (as in image number 7), you pull another loop through the bar wrap loop, as shown below.
Tighten down the wrap just as you would in the previous set of instructions.

dsc00781.jpg

2
Reach through the loop and grab the standing end with your fingers. Pull a loop through.

dsc00791.jpg

Do it again… reach through the new loop and pull through a loop…

dsc00801.jpg

And again…

dsc00811.jpg

And again…

dsc00821.jpg

And again and again… Keep doing this until you run out of rope or reach the desired length of chain.

dsc00861.jpg
dsc00871.jpg
dsc00881.jpg
dsc00891.jpg
dsc00901.jpg
dsc00911.jpg

3 End the chain by simply reaching through the last loop and pulling the standing end all the way through, then pull it tight, as illustrated below.

2 dsc00931.jpg
3 dsc00941.jpg
4 dsc00951.jpg
5 dsc00961.jpg
6 dsc00971.jpg

And now for the special feature of this variant! When your ready To untie your partner, all you need to do is undo the end of the Chain sinnet and pull.
The entire chain and wrist tie comes right apart.
